Massive Drug Bust: 15 Tons of Hashish Disguised as Produce Seized in Spain's Largest 2025 Haul

The Spanish anti-drug police (UDYCO) seized 15.36 tons of Moroccan hashish, hidden in watermelons and plastic potatoes, in the port of Almeria. In total, eight people were arrested, including five in Almeria and three in Torremolinos.

This seizure is "the fifth largest hashish seizure recorded in Spain" and the largest in 2025, said the central commissioner of the UDYCO, Antonio Jesús Martínez Duarte, during a press conference, hailing the collaboration between the national police and the French and Moroccan authorities. "The drugs came from Morocco destined for France," he added.

The UDYCO agents managed to get their hands on this large quantity of hashish, after being alerted by the French Office for the Fight against Drugs (OFAST) of an attempt to introduce the drugs, hidden in a truck from Morocco. The vehicle, a Chereau refrigerated semi-trailer, embarked on June 18 on a ferry connecting Nador to the port of Almeria. After disembarking on June 20, the truck was placed under surveillance.

After several laps in the city on June 20 to try to escape the police, the truck finally headed towards a warehouse located on Pablo Picasso street, in the El Cercado industrial area of Huércal de Almería. It was at this moment that the UDYCO police intervened, discovering inside the trailer bales of hashish hidden in watermelons and plastic potatoes.

Five men of Moroccan and Spanish nationality were arrested during the operation. They were presented to the competent prosecutor’s office, which ordered their pre-trial detention as alleged perpetrators of an offense against public health. The drugs, weighing 15.36 tons and valued at 104.9 million euros, as well as a semi-rigid boat and a van found in the warehouse, were seized. Three other people were arrested on Wednesday in Torremolinos (Malaga) as part of this case.
