Mass Horse Deaths Spark Outrage in Morocco After Seizure Operation

An animal tragedy has struck the commune of Sidi Taibi, in the province of Kénitra in Morocco. One hundred and fifty-eight horses, out of a total of about two hundred, perished in the municipal pound. The animals, seized during operations to combat sand theft, succumbed to hunger and climatic conditions.
These horses were used by sand thieves who, during the interventions of the authorities, fled by abandoning their mounts. Legal complications prevented the auctioning of these seized animals.
Human rights activists had proposed to the local authorities to have the surviving horses adopted by residents of the region. This request was rejected without clear explanations.
The case is causing outrage among the local population, who denounce the negligence and lack of solutions to save these animals. Many shocking photos and videos have been circulated on social media.
