Marwa Benahmed finally changes hospitals, deemed hopeless
The transfer took place in an atmosphere of absolute relief. While the UZ Antwerpen (UZA) was about to seal the fate of Marwa Benahmed, deemed condemned by the medical staff, the 18-year-old Moroccan girl has finally been transferred on Monday to the Cadix hospital.
This is the end of an unsustainable ethical and emotional conflict for her loved ones, who now see a new phase of care marked by unprecedented examinations and an unexpected resurgence of hope.
For the first time in weeks, the family is breathing. The transfer of the teenager, who fell into a coma after a cerebral hemorrhage at school last month, went without incident. But it is above all the reception in the new Antwerp establishment that changes the situation: according to a relative, the Cadix hospital "takes the situation very seriously" and has launched examinations that the UZA apparently had never carried out.
This change of scenery marks a complete break with the toxic climate of recent days. Trust was definitively broken with the previous team, who believed that "no dignified life" was possible anymore for Marwa, who had been without oxygen for ten minutes during her accident. The UZA doctors were considering stopping care, provoking the indignation of the family.
The case took a decisive turn last Thursday. Against all odds and in contradiction with the fatalistic diagnosis, the young woman reacted to the presence of her mother and her lawyer in her room. A sign of life sufficient to justify this transfer and relaunch the fight for her survival, far from the hospital that had already condemned her.
