The iPhone 15 of Yasmine explodes, Apple refuses to intervene

The incident occurred in the early afternoon. Yasmine, the owner, had just removed her SIM card a few moments earlier. "I hear a boom. I come back to the terrace and I see my iPhone burning. Flames were coming out, it was spectacular," she recounts. The device is now unusable: the screen is blackened and the battery is completely charred.

However, the safety conditions seemed to be respected. The smartphone was not exposed to intense sunlight, had not suffered any recent impact, and was using its original battery and charger. The device had been purchased new in 2024 from a specialized store.

Despite the potential danger of the event, the girl’s parents were met with a refusal from Apple to intervene. With the one-year manufacturer’s warranty expired, the brand has declined any request for reimbursement or commercial gesture. "The device could have burned my niece if she had had it in her hand or if it had caught fire at night under a pillow," indignantly Mohamed, the teenager’s uncle, told La Dernière Heure.

Contacted, the spokesperson for Apple Benelux in Berlin, Julius Kirchenbauer, did not provide any precise explanations on the origin of this combustion, despite the transmission of photos and the sales receipt.

While Apple has never carried out massive recalls for this model, similar incidents of "exothermic reaction" have already been reported on several generations of iPhones. These cases remain isolated compared to the three billion devices sold by the brand since 2007. Experts, however, recall that lithium batteries can, in rare situations, undergo an internal short circuit causing an instantaneous fire.
