Marrakech Tourism Hit by Surge in Mosquito Population

A strong proliferation of mosquitoes has been observed in recent days in Marrakech, a city where many local and foreign tourists have traveled for the end-of-year holidays.
Thus, many taxi drivers positioned near the very select Mamounia hotel have complained, in a video shared on social networks, of this massive invasion of mosquitoes, which causes great inconvenience to the drivers, in addition to the health risks that these insects can generate.
The matter is not limited to the people of Marrakech. Tourists, the vital economic engine of the ochre city, are also suffering from mosquito attacks. This situation, which they describe as alarming, has prompted local activists and tourism professionals to wonder why the city’s health authorities are not acting more effectively to control this situation.
Tangier also affected
Marrakech is not the only city affected. Faced with the proliferation of rats and mosquitoes in many neighborhoods of Tangier, the local authorities had decided to allocate two million dirhams to finance a rodent control and disinsectization campaign.
The suspension of insecticide spraying since last summer had led to this proliferation of mosquitoes, particularly in neighborhoods located near the beach, waterways and green spaces. The residents of Tangier, overwhelmed by the situation, had alerted the local authorities, who had asked the company in charge of the delegated management of the city’s cleanliness to take the appropriate measures to avoid the spread of infectious diseases.
