Marrakech Governor Slams Mayor Over City’s Decline into ’Garbage Dump’

The city of Marrakech has gone from being an indispensable tourist hub to a garbage dump, under the mandate of Mohamed Larbi Belcaid. The mayor, from the Party of Justice and Development, according to Karim Qassi Lahlou, wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, has failed in his mission to keep the ochre city clean.
Among the other reprimands addressed by the Wali to the mayor of Marrakech, there is the lack of firmness in decision-making towards the three companies in charge of the city’s hygiene management. A leniency that has caused Marrakech to lose its reputation in terms of hygiene and cleanliness. Dissatisfied with this open-air garbage dump that the ochre city has become, Karim Qassi Lahlou sent a letter reprimanding Mohamed Larbi Belcaid, head of the Marrakech municipal council, reports barlamane.com
The Wali, in his correspondence, drew the mayor’s attention to the advanced deterioration of the city’s image, while indicating that household waste is accumulating and that the garbage cans are in poor condition. He also pointed out the uncleanliness of the garbage cans, the bad odor of which affects the citizens who complain about it. The governor will go further in his correspondence by noting the inability of the municipal council to fully fulfill its missions.
Several citizens from various neighborhoods of Marrakech have, for their part, according to the same source, denounced the mayor’s management, and have protested against his laxity in enforcing the law towards the companies in charge of managing the urban hygiene sector.
