Marrakech Mayor Faces Probe Over $28 Million in Missing Funds

The serious charges against the mayor of Marrakech, Larbi Belcaid, and his deputy, Younes Benslimane, could result in the withdrawal of their passports and the prohibition to leave the national territory.
The sentence is likely to be pronounced by the investigating judge of the financial crimes court in Marrakech, during the hearing on March 11 and 12, according to rue20.
The two officials, members of the Party of Justice and Development, are the subject of a complaint filed by the National Human Rights Council, accusing them of misappropriation of public funds.
This involves the awarding of a set of 50 negotiated contracts, worth 280 million dirhams. Allegations that the mayor of Marrakech and his deputy categorically refute.
