Marrakech Ends Controversial Car Booting Practice, Revamps Parking System

Motorists in Marrakech will no longer be immobilized by the installation of boots in 2020. This turnaround follows the liberation of the last parking spot in the paid parking zone managed by the company Avilmar.
According to Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, the people of Marrakech, constantly victims of this practice adopted by the Avilmar company, have filed complaints. In their grievances, they believe that the installation of boots was an illegal practice, since the fines imposed are not mentioned anywhere in the Highway Code, the Penal Code, or any regulatory text.
The same daily newspaper specifies that the city would have almost disengaged from the company by limiting its management to the Arsat Maach parking lot, near Jemaa el-Fna square, with the arrival of the PJD mayor, Mohamed Larbi Belcaid.
The result of a partnership between the city of Marrakech and the CDG, the delegated management of the parking service in the city of Marrakech was entrusted, on January 15, 2010 and for a period of ten years, to Avilmar, a local development company. The company’s capital is 51% owned by the city of Marrakech and 49% by CG Park, a subsidiary of CDG Développement.
The purpose of this partnership was to protect the interests of Marrakech motorists and solve the parking problems the ochre city was experiencing, the newspaper argues.
