Marrakech Authorities Shut Down 31 Hotels for Violations

A thunderbolt in the hotel industry of Marrakech! A few days ago, the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, Farid Chourak, ordered the closure of 31 establishments, including hotels and guest houses.
The sanction is heavy: three months of closure for these establishments that have not respected the law, despite previous warnings.
What exactly are they being accused of? Noise nuisance that disturbs the peace of the residents, non-compliance with closing hours, but also "inappropriate behavior," in the words of the authorities. In other words, actions that tarnish the reputation of the ochre city and undermine its tourist appeal.
Before resorting to this radical decision, mixed commissions, composed of local authorities, representatives of the municipality and the wilaya, inspected the establishments. It must be acknowledged that some owners have turned a deaf ear to the requests for compliance.
Farid Chourak decided to take action. In addition to the temporary closure, he forced the owners to pay the salaries of the employees during these three months. And the Wali to warn: in case of recidivism, it is the definitive closure and legal proceedings that await the offenders.
This decision comes as Morocco is set to host international events, such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. Other host cities could also be targeted by sanctions.
