Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Violent Home Invasion in Southern France

The Nîmes Criminal Court sentenced a middle-aged man to 10 years in prison for assaulting and robbing an elderly person at her home in Vergèze, in the Gard.
The assault took place on October 2, 2022 in Vergèze. Bérangère, 64, opened her front door to the defendant, who was knocking insistently in the middle of the night. This is followed by slaps and punches. The middle-aged man shouted "Allahu Akbar," thinking to pass himself off as a Muslim. He managed to steal 30 euros in cash from the sexagenarian. Dissatisfied with his haul, he threatens the elderly person and asks her for jewelry and cash. As he was heading towards an ATM so that she could empty her bank account, a couple in a vehicle crossed their path, on Avenue de la Camargue, reports Midi Libre.
At the bar, the defendant apologizes and tries to justify his act by the years spent in prison. "It’s all those years (22, ed.) spent in detention that gave me a blow to the brain!" The verdict is handed down: the middle-aged man is sentenced to 10 years in prison. He faced 20 years in prison.
