Man Sentenced to 8 Months for Death Threats Against Lille Mosque, Praising Terrorism

The Lille court on Wednesday sentenced, to eight months’ imprisonment with immediate detention, the man who had threatened, last June, a mosque in the city.
In a video widely circulated on social media, the individual, 23 years old, made death threats against the worshippers of the Lille-Sud mosque. The young man had repeatedly praised terrorism, describing the Islamophobic massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, as "pure happiness" in particular.
The mosque had filed a complaint and the individual was arrested. During his interrogation, he admitted the facts, later declaring that he had acted under the influence of alcohol. Presented to the prosecutor, the man was placed in detention.
This Wednesday, October 26, the verdict was handed down: he was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment with immediate detention. He will also have to comply with a three-year socio-judicial follow-up, failing which he will have to serve an additional one-year prison sentence.
Commenting on the decision, the prosecutor, who had requested 16 months’ imprisonment including 8 months suspended with probation, described the "intolerable" acts committed by a person who is informed on "lousy" sites of the far-right sphere and who "did not respect" the judicial supervision to which he was subject after two months in pre-trial detention.
