Major Drug Bust: Nearly 1 Ton of Cannabis Seized Near Bordeaux, 8 Arrested

Plainclothes police officers seized nearly a ton of Moroccan cannabis in Bruges and arrested eight people, seven of whom were indicted.

The judicial investigation opened in August 2020 and which had led in September to the arrest of a retired couple suspected of transporting drugs from Morocco via Spain to the Bordeaux metropolis, a "fairly organized structure" has borne fruit. Nearly a ton of cannabis was intercepted on the eve of last weekend (May 29) in Bruges, near Bordeaux, the largest seizure ever made in the Bordeaux metropolis, according to a source close to the investigation.

In total, the investigators from the unit in charge of the fight against drugs of the Departmental Security Department seized 701 kg of cannabis resin and 250 kg of herbal cannabis, i.e. 952 kg as well as 91,000 euros in cash, this source confirmed, thus confirming the information from Sud-Ouest. The Bordeaux prosecutor’s office stated that they proceeded with a series of arrests after observing the delivery in Bruges early in the morning by a truck of a large cargo of cannabis. The plainclothes police intervened in a parking lot in the freight area in Bruges where local traffickers and a "logistics manager" had agreed to meet to unload the drugs.

"A portion of the initial cargo, already taken away by one of the traffickers, was then intercepted" at a toll by the customs officers, "while another portion also already unloaded was found at the home of one of the members of the network," as well as "about 91,000 euros in cash," the prosecutor’s office added. The operation resulted in the arrest of eight people, including the 47-year-old driver and three women. After being presented before the investigating judge on Monday and Tuesday last week, they were indicted. Five men were imprisoned and two of the women were released under judicial supervision. The third, who is pregnant, will be summoned later for her indictment.
