By 2050, Spain’s capital could see its thermometer rise by more than 5°C. This temperature surge will give Madrid a climate similar to that of Marrakech, multiplying heat waves and water shortages.

If carbon dioxide emissions maintain their current trajectory, Madrid’s climate will undergo radical change. Within a quarter century, local temperatures will rise by 5.2 to 5.5°C, dangerously bringing the metropolis closer to the city of Marrakech. Heat wave episodes will last twice as long, inflicting on residents more than two months with a perceived temperature above 33°C, to which will be added 62 additional hot nights each year.

The water deficit will worsen by 2050, with water demand potentially reaching 4.5 times available capacity, directly weakening the recharge of vital dams like Valmayor or El Atazar. This structural shortage will face a devastating paradox: precipitation will become rarer but gain in intensity. Spain’s capital will thus remain highly exposed to sudden flooding and overflow of rivers such as the Manzanares or the Jarama.

The impact of this transformation promises to be heavy for the economy and public health. The Madrid region risks reducing its gross domestic product (GDP) per capita by 16.4%, while the drop in productivity linked to heat stress could destroy 7,700 jobs nationwide by 2030. Facing the worst-case scenario predicting 68,000 additional deaths, municipal authorities, cited by Europa Press, insist on the urgency of abandoning simple crisis management to anticipate these extreme risks directly in urban planning.
