License plates: the Moroccan puzzle finally solved?

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Qayouh, stated that his department is working to "find the appropriate formula to solve the problem resulting from the difference between the format of the license plate to be used during international travel and the one in force on the national territory".

According to the minister, this approach is part of "the interaction with the issues raised concerning the application of the provisions of Article 28 of the said order, particularly those relating to the compatibility of the license plate format with the one in use inside and outside the country, before and after the trip abroad". In a written response to a question from the deputy and president of the Progress and Socialism group in the House of Representatives, Rachid Hamouni, the member of the government indicated that this article "requires motor vehicles registered in Morocco and used in international traffic to bear a license plate in accordance with the provisions relating to the numbers and license plates of the ordinary series, with the addition of uppercase Latin letters and their Arabic letter equivalents constituting the second part of the license plate, the format of which is defined in Annex No. 13 of the said order".

This provision "was introduced as part of the harmonization of national legislation with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which sets the conditions for the admission of cars and trailers in international traffic, and which Morocco ratified on December 29, 1982", recalled Abdessamad Qayouh, adding that with regard to "the adoption of a single format valid everywhere for the license plates of vehicles registered in Morocco, the first communiqué published by the National Road Safety Agency on this subject aimed to remind citizens wishing to use their vehicles in international traffic of the conditions to be respected concerning the license plates, in order to avoid infractions related to the non-compliance of the vehicle’s license plates with the aforementioned conditions".

As a palliative measure to this problem, "it was decided to authorize all road users to use the special license plate for international traffic, the format of which is defined in Annex No. 13 of the same order, during driving and circulation on the national territory", specified the official, stressing that "the Ministry of Transport and Logistics has worked in coordination with the High Command of the Royal Gendarmerie and the General Directorate of National Security in order to give instructions to their respective control agents to take into account the content of this decision during road control operations".
