Leeds United Eyes Morocco's World Cup Star Bounou as Potential Goalkeeper Replacement

Moroccan international Yassine Bounou, one of the architects of the historic and exceptional journey of the Atlas Lions at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, is on Leeds United’s radar. He could be the replacement for their goalkeeper, Illan Meslier.

According to TeamTalk, Illan Meslier remains a highly sought-after number 1, but in Spain, Sport Witness claims that Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, whose contract with FC Seville runs until 2024, could be the man who will replace the young Frenchman at Elland Road. The Moroccan goalkeeper has played 134 games for his club and has put in good performances with the Atlas Lions during the World Cup in Qatar. Even if in the last two league matches with FC Seville, he was replaced by Marko Dmitrovic, he remains an excellent goalkeeper. The 32-year-old player has played 31 European competitions in his career and has also 52 caps with Morocco.

When asked about a possible departure from Leeds United, Illan Meslier believes that it would be a mistake to project himself so far. "There are many steps before that: continuity to be sought with Leeds, the Euro Hopes in June. [...] To succeed in all this, I have to be good. Because no one will come looking for me if I’m not. And if I’m solicited, I’ll take the time to think about my future with a clear head," he recently told Ouest France.
