EU Leaders Condemn Migrant 'Instrumentalization' Amid Border Concerns

The heads of state and government of the European Union condemned and rejected on Thursday "the attempts of third countries to instrumentalize migrants for political purposes". Morocco is not mentioned in the final text.

The European leaders, on the occasion of their summit opened on Thursday, stressed that recent "events related to migration are worrying and require continued vigilance and urgent action". In this sense, they called for "intensifying partnerships and cooperation with countries of origin and transit" of migrants, in order to "prevent loss of human life and reduce pressure on European borders". The heads of state and government of the EU did not fail to welcome the significant decline in migratory flows in recent years, the result of actions taken by the EU.

The European Executive has asked the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to draw up an operational action plan as early as this fall for "priority" countries of origin and transit, without giving details on the countries concerned. But it seems obvious that Morocco, already sanctioned by a European Parliament resolution for having "provoked" the migration crisis in Ceuta, in reaction to the reception of Brahim Ghali, the leader of the Polisario Front, in a hospital in Logroño, is part of this list of "priority" countries, according to EFE.

The debate on the current migration crises was not initiated by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, diplomatic sources at EFE point out, indicating that it was rather raised following the arrival of migrants, mainly Syrians, Iraqis and Iranians in the EU from Belarus.
