Justice for Ismaël Aali: A 20-year-old man found dead in Lyon, the suspect charged with racist murder

The body of Ismaël Aali, a 20-year-old man, was found on January 6th in the Prin pond, in Loire-sur-Rhône, near Lyon. The judicial investigation, which is leaning towards a crime motivated by the victim’s origin, has led to the indictment and pre-trial detention of a 21-year-old suspect for racist murder.

The suspect, who had met Ismaël Aali in the context of job search, had initially presented himself to the authorities to report the disappearance of his friend. However, the investigations carried out by the Givors research brigade revealed suspicious elements.

Surveillance camera images show the two men walking together by the water, before the suspect is seen alone, returning to the scene several times during the night without alerting the emergency services. The Lyon prosecutor’s office indicated that the individual had a criminal record suggesting a xenophobic ideology.

Ismaël Aali’s family, who was fatherless and an only child, is now expressing deep frustration at the silence of the judicial institution. Through the voice of his lawyer, they denounce a lack of communication and a treatment they consider unfair, as the investigating judge has limited exchanges with the relatives.

A solidarity crowdfunding campaign has been opened to support the victim’s mother in this ordeal and cover the costs related to the funeral and legal procedures.
