Jailed Moroccan Journalist’s Prison Conditions Disputed by Authorities

Contrary to the allegations of the family of the detainee Soulaiman Raissouni, prosecuted for sexual assault with violence and kidnapping, the management of the local prison Ain Sebaâ 1 indicated that the defendant is placed in an isolation cell at his request, equipped with all the sanitary conditions. Since his isolation, the accused has not filed any complaint about his detention conditions.
In a post on her Facebook account, Khouloud Mokhtari, wife of the Akhbar Al Yaoum columnist, stated that her husband was suffering from deplorable detention conditions in a small cell at the mercy of the cold, humidity and mold conducive to the onset of respiratory illnesses.
In response to this post, the prison administration clarified that it is rather an 8m² isolation cell, with light, ventilation and a toilet, as well as a washing machine and a digital terrestrial television.
This cell is located in a wing reserved for prisoners who are pursuing their studies in various cycles. According to the same source, this campaign led by the family members of the detainee and others aims to link the situation of the imprisoned columnist to that of the detainee Nasser Zefzafi, a former inmate, arrested in the context of the events in Al-Hoceima.
It also aims to tarnish the image of Morocco, through the dissemination of "facts" fabricated from scratch in order to make the public believe that inappropriate detention conditions prevail in this penitentiary institution.
