Israeli Teacher Bridges Cultures Through Moroccan Cuisine and Arabic Dialect

Ruti Ben Ami, an Israeli teacher, builds the bridge between the Arabic language and Moroccan cuisine. She dreams of real peace between Jews and Arabs.
"My father and mother are originally from Morocco. My husband too. My parents only spoke Arabic at home, only in the Moroccan dialect (darija)," says the woman who taught Arabic for more than 40 years. She recounts that her four other sisters and she learned Moroccan cuisine from their late mother. This mother of three children says she knows how to cook Moroccan dishes like harira, salad, chicken vermicelli, tagine, etc.
"I really like Morocco. I’ve been there three times and I felt at home," she said. For Ruti, language is a bridge to build peace or even dialogue. "If you understand your language, I can communicate with you and understand you," she is convinced. She dreams of real peace between Jews and Arabs throughout the world, particularly with the Arab world.
