Israeli Knesset Speaker Influences Paraguay’s Support for Moroccan Sahara

The Speaker of the Knesset, Amir Ohana, son of Moroccan-origin parents, played a major role in the decision taken last November by the Paraguayan Senate to support Morocco’s sovereignty and the Moroccan autonomy initiative, reveal Israeli media.
A few days before the adoption of the resolution supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity, Amir Ohana met with the President of the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, and the Paraguayan President, Santiago Peña, during their visit to Israel, reports the Jerusalem Post, and was able to convince them of the importance for their country to recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara. Back in Paraguay, the President of the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, presented Resolution No. 796 which was adopted on November 13.
The Senate resolution urges the Paraguayan government to officially recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and to reflect this position in international forums. Transmitted to President Santiago Pena and Moroccan Ambassador to Asuncion, Badreddine Abdelmoumni, the text also calls on the Paraguayan government to support the Moroccan autonomy plan. Previously, the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies had adopted seven resolutions in favor of Morocco, including five specifically addressing the territorial issue since the opening of the Moroccan embassy in Asunción in November 2016.
This is not the first time that Amir Ohana has advocated for the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. This son of Moroccan immigrants had formalized Israel’s recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara during a visit to Morocco in 2023, recalls the same source.
