Islamophobic Graffiti Targets Mosque in Guingamp, France; First Such Incident in 40 Years

Saturday 9 December 2023, by Said

The mosque in Guingamp, in the Côtes-d’Armor, was targeted overnight from Thursday, December 7 to Friday, December 8, 2023 by Islamophobic graffiti. A first in 40 years.

Graffiti, made at night, "in black paint" and committed "to the detriment of the Roudourou activity and leisure center association", were discovered on Friday, according to the public prosecutor, Nicolas Heitz.

For the municipality, "It’s distressing, we are outraged. This is the first time this has happened in Guingamp. What matters to me now is to provide comfort without wanting to highlight the stupidity."

On their side, the municipal authorities say they do not want to make "any comment. It is an act that we hope is isolated." "It has been forty years since there has been a place of worship in Guingamp, and there has never been a problem," they said.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, in a message on X, expressed "Solidarity with the Muslims of the commune. These hateful inscriptions have no place on our soil and the investigation will allow the perpetrators to be identified," confirming the opening of an investigation by the public prosecutor.
