Infantino Crisis: Could Morocco Lose the 2030 World Cup Final?
Gianni Infantino is facing the most serious crisis of his presidency at FIFA. His possible downfall would not jeopardize the 2030 World Cup in Morocco, but it could deprive the Kingdom of an influential ally in its bid to host the final.
The FIFA president had to abandon, on Saturday, August 1, his plan to open part of the organization’s commercial activities to private investors. His plan involved creating a company that could turn World Cup revenues into a financial asset.

The opposition went beyond the European framework alone. UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, while the Asian and North American confederations also challenged the method used. Two senior organization officials subsequently publicly disavowed Infantino.
This revolt weakens a leader who had nevertheless seemed certain to be reelected in March 2027. According to Le Monde, UEFA is now seeking a candidate capable of building a global coalition against him. The next electoral congress is to be held in Rabat.
Casablanca could lose its best ally
This battle directly concerns Morocco. Gianni Infantino maintains a public closeness with Fouzi Lekjaa and has supported the development of Moroccan football for several years. At the opening of FIFA’s African office in Rabat, he called the president of the Moroccan Football Federation “my brother Fouzi Lekjaa” and described the Mohammed VI complex as a nerve center of world football.
His presence at the helm of FIFA provides Morocco’s bid with a favorable political climate as Casablanca directly faces Madrid.
The venue for the final has still not been chosen. Morocco is building the Grand Stade Hassan II near Casablanca, announced with 115,000 seats, to compete with the Santiago-Bernabéu and Camp Nou. FIFA retains the final say in this fiercely contested decision between the two countries.
If Infantino were defeated in 2027, Morocco would retain its stadium, investments, and technical arguments. However, it would lose a president particularly receptive to its ambitions. His successor could be backed by a coalition including UEFA and officials determined to rebalance power in Europe’s favor.

Infantino’s downfall would therefore not automatically hand victory to Spain. However, it could reshuffle the deck at the worst possible moment for Morocco, before FIFA decides one of the most symbolic choices of the 2030 World Cup.
