Illegal Turkish Gold Floods Moroccan Market, Threatening Local Jewelers

The illegal introduction of Turkish gold in Morocco is a common practice that threatens Moroccan jewelers with considerable losses or even bankruptcies. The latter are calling on the authorities to put an end to this trafficking.
Illegally introduced into Morocco by mafia networks, Turkish gold is flooding the local market to the great dismay of professionals in the sector, reports Assabah. They claim that considerable quantities of Turkish jewelry are being sold publicly without respecting the law, as these jewels do not bear the manufacturer’s hallmark or that of the merchant. They denounce the sale of these products manufactured by large Turkish companies at attractive prices to fake jewelers. In turn, the latter resell them at competitive prices publicly "in full view of the relevant control services," they also denounce.
To counter the threat posed by this Turkish gold trafficking, professionals in the sector are calling on the authorities to act by accelerating the implementation of the strategic plan for this sector. They also call on the supervisory ministry’s services to "conduct inspection campaigns to verify the legality of the activities of these merchants" and the customs administration to strengthen its controls on goods from abroad.
