Illegal Cigarette Sales in Morocco Rise to 5.23%, Study Finds

The penetration rate of contraband cigarettes on the Moroccan market has increased from 3.73% in 2018 to 5.23% in 2019.
The penetration rate of contraband cigarettes on the national market was set at 5.23% this year, according to the 6th Prevalence Study of Contraband Cigarettes, conducted by the National Commission for the Fight against Cigarette Smuggling.
The results of this study, presented at a meeting of the Commission held on Thursday, September 12, at the headquarters of the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration (ADII), reveal that this rate has increased compared to 2018, when it stood at 3.73%, against 5.64% in 2017 and 7.64% in 2016, the ADII press release said.
In addition, the stakeholders in this meeting held a debate on the evolution of cigarette smuggling and the joint measures to be put in place to counter this scourge.
