Morocco Bolsters Air Force with 10 Cutting-Edge Caracal Helicopters from Airbus

As part of the modernization of its Royal Air Force (RAF), Morocco signed an agreement with Airbus Helicopters on Monday, September 1st for the acquisition of ten H225M Caracal helicopters, dedicated to tactical transport and search and rescue missions as well as rapid deployment.

"Morocco’s interest in the H225M dates back to at least December 2021, when the RAF had initiated discussions with Airbus Helicopters for the acquisition of eight helicopters," sources at Barlamane indicate, adding that "the negotiations had resumed in September 2024, after a suspension due to the diplomatic tensions between Morocco and France (2021-2023) and that Rabat was then considering the purchase of twelve H225M."

The same sources recall that "as early as November 2024, Morocco was in advanced negotiations for ten H225M," stressing that "despite exchanges at the highest level, including the presence of Airbus CEO Bruno Even during a state visit by President Emmanuel Macron [in late October 2024], the agreement remained pending." In fact, "the discussions focused on the technical configurations, pricing and contractual conditions, with the completion of the negotiations expected for 2025."

Furthermore, "Airbus Helicopters had proposed the establishment in Morocco of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) center to ensure operational support and serve as a platform for West Africa," the same sources specify, explaining that "the H225M Caracal is a heavy transport helicopter capable of carrying up to 28 equipped soldiers, or of carrying out medical evacuation, combat search and rescue, cargo transport and special forces support missions."

This aircraft "has a range of over 1,200 kilometers, modern avionics and secure communication systems, allowing it to operate in demanding environments, day and night." According to technical notes, "its powerful engines and protective devices ensure the versatility appreciated by several NATO air forces and third countries."

"The acquisition of the H225M Caracal is part of a broader set of equipment programs, including the purchase of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and F-16 Block 70/72 Viper fighter jets," the same sources affirm, adding that "these choices reflect Rabat’s determination to equip its armed forces with tools commensurate with the regional security challenges."
