Historic Moroccan Site Chellah Undergoes $1.1 Million Restoration Project

The work of conservation, restoration and enhancement of the Merinid Medersa and the Chellah necropolis has been launched, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, in partnership with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
The work will be done in two phases. First, it is a matter of protecting the existing decorative elements and restoring the minaret of the Medersa, the wall sections and its entrance door. Sanitation and restoration work that will cost nearly 4 million DH.
As for the second project, it concerns the conservation, restoration and enhancement of the Chellah necropolis and its dependencies.
It amounts to 7 million DH and focuses on the restoration of the interior and exterior walls of the Necropolis and its dependencies, the mosque, the mihrab and the minaret, in addition to the Darih of Abi Al Hassan and the old and new coatings.
This project incorporates the technical elements necessary for the security and operation of the site, a city located 2 km from the center of Rabat, which is the oldest human agglomeration at the mouth of the Bouregreg.
