The halal meat market is exploding in Spain

The halal meat sector is experiencing rapid growth in Spain, particularly in Catalonia. This significant expansion is directly responding to the growing demand from Muslim communities, dominated by the large Moroccan diaspora residing in the country.

The official data from the Catalan government illustrates this economic and demographic transformation. Currently, 56 of the 118 slaughterhouses authorized in the region hold the halal certification, thus allowing the meat to be prepared in strict compliance with Islamic precepts.

This slaughter method follows rigorous religious and practical requirements. The operation must be carried out by an adult Muslim using a very sharp blade, on a living and healthy animal, necessarily oriented towards Mecca during the recitation of a prayer.

Catalonia is now asserting itself as one of the pillars of the Spanish meat industry, concentrating the largest number of infrastructures among the approximately 650 authorized slaughterhouses in Spain.
