Gibraltar Tunnel Project Still in Feasibility Study Phase, Construction Not Imminent

The information that the construction work on the tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar, which will connect the two countries, but also Africa and Europe, before the 2030 World Cup that Morocco and Spain are co-organizing with Portugal, will start next year to be completed in five years is false.
This announcement from an "unknown source" is completely "unfounded," denies the National Society for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) to Médias24, explaining that the project owner of the Gibraltar tunnel is the Moroccan-Spanish joint committee, "the only one authorized to publicly communicate around the project." It will assure: "Neither the SNED study company in Morocco nor the SECEGSA in Spain have such information." "The fixed link project, in the feasibility study phase, is however experiencing a revitalization thanks to the resumption of the sessions of the joint committee, allowing in the long term the necessary developments for the visibility of its realization, given its scale and complexity," completes the SNED.
According to the Spanish press, Morocco and Spain are now opting for a railway tunnel instead of a tunnel "allowing the circulation of vehicles, because of problems related to traffic congestion, which could cause many problems, especially at peak times, due to the intensification of the number of freight carriers transiting through the Strait of Gibraltar." A railway tunnel that will allow the transport of vehicles and trucks, as well as the circulation of high-speed trains.
During a visit to Morocco in March, Óscar Puente, the Spanish Minister of Transport, informed the Moroccan Minister of Transport, Mohammed Abdeljalil, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Water, Nizar Baraka, of the interest of Spanish companies to participate in the development projects of the transport sector in the kingdom in general and the Morocco-Spain tunnel under the Strait in particular. The latter will be on the agenda of the next High-Level Meeting between Morocco and Spain scheduled for the end of May. On the agenda of the meeting, the development of a roadmap to assess the studies carried out and finalize the design of this large-scale project; the validation of the 2023-2025 work plan, which will include, alongside the overall strategy to be approved at the same time and the analysis of the feasibility of the construction of a reconnaissance gallery to identify the geo-mechanical characteristics.
