Spanish Watermelon Exports Surge as Morocco’s Plummet in EU Market

The year 2024 was marked by a sharp decrease in Moroccan watermelon exports to the European Union, a trend opposite to that observed for Spain, which saw its volumes increase and its leading position strengthened.
Regarding Morocco, official data from specialized European organizations indicate a drop of more than 62% in volumes exported to the EU in 2024, compared to the record year of 2022 (over 195 million kilos). In 2024, Moroccan exports reached about 102 million kilos, a level considered historically low. This decline led to Morocco’s demotion from second to sixth place among supplier countries to the European market.
This decline is attributed to a difficult context for the Moroccan watermelon sector. Notably mentioned are tighter regulations, increased logistical costs, and unfavorable weather conditions, factors that would have affected the competitiveness of this production.
At the same time, Spain saw its watermelon exports to the European Union increase by 14.44%. This growth allowed Spanish producers to strengthen their position as the main supplier to the EU market for this fruit.
This progression reinforces Spain’s leadership in this agricultural sector, as the agricultural campaign is ongoing and approaching the summer months when watermelon consumption is highest in Europe.
