Giant Ferries Morocco MRE Operation Marhaba Summer 2024
To facilitate the summer return of MREs, the GNV company is deploying two new eco-friendly ships between Europe and Tangier Med. The connections started on June 1st to meet strong demand.
From this summer onwards, Operation Marhaba relies on expanded transport capacity to streamline the return of Moroccans residing abroad. The Italian shipowner is integrating two next-generation ferries on its route connecting Genoa to Tangier Med, with a transit through Barcelona. The GNV Aurora entered service on June 1st, followed by the GNV Virgo on July 1st. These ships will ensure weekly departures to absorb the peak summer traffic, offering passengers more regular crossing conditions.

Beyond passengers, this deployment consolidates Tangier Med port as the continent’s main logistics gateway. Designed in collaboration with the Mohammed V Foundation and the Ministry of Transport, this system boosts trans-Mediterranean commercial exchanges. The operator has structured its local governance around Carole Montarsolo, appointed general director in Morocco, and Mohammed Kabbaj, strategic partner responsible for steering institutional relations on the ground.

Officially christened in Tangier, the GNV Aurora and its sister ship display impressive technical specifications, with 426 cabins accommodating 1,700 passengers and freight space of 2,780 linear meters. These units operate on liquefied natural gas, which cuts their carbon dioxide emissions in half. "We want to offer Moroccan citizens residing in Europe and their families a more comfortable travel experience," emphasizes chief executive Matteo Catani, convinced that this investment will support national economic growth ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
