Germany Joins US and Israel in Supporting Morocco's Sahara Stance, Spanish Media Reports

After the United States and Israel, Germany would have declared its support for Morocco in the Sahara conflict, warns a Spanish media.

"The new German government has joined the list of powerful allies that Moroccan diplomacy has built up in recent years," the Spanish media Vozpópuli said on Wednesday in an article titled: "Morocco’s powerful allies against Spain: the USA, Israel... and now Germany."

According to the website, the new German executive led by Olaf Scholz has expressed its support for Morocco in the Sahara conflict in order to appease tensions with the kingdom. In this regard, it recalls the statement of the new German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, who specified that "Morocco, with its autonomy plan presented in 2007, makes an important contribution to a peace agreement."

This statement by the head of German diplomacy "adds to the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, clearly expressed by other powers in recent months," the same source argued, adding that the United States under Trump was the first country to recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara on December 10, 2020.

On May 6, Morocco summoned its ambassador to Berlin in response to "acts of hostility" by the German authorities, questioning in particular Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
