Germany Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara Dispute

Germany believes that the autonomy proposal is an important contribution from Morocco to resolve the dispute around the Sahara.
"Germany supports the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, to reach a fair, lasting and acceptable political solution on the basis of Resolution 2602," says the German Federal Foreign Office in a statement.
According to German diplomacy, Morocco is an important bridge between the North and the South, both politically, culturally and economically - the country is a key partner of the European Union and Germany in North Africa. "Germany and Morocco have had diplomatic relations since 1956," it recalls, emphasizing "the vast reforms" undertaken by the kingdom over the past decade.
The German ministry also emphasized the "major role" played by the kingdom "for stability and sustainable development in the region." This includes its diplomatic commitment to the Libyan peace process.
Since March 2021, Morocco has broken off its relations with Germany "due to deep misunderstandings on fundamental issues of the kingdom," including Berlin’s position on the Sahara and its interference in Morocco’s internal affairs.
