US Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan as ’Credible Solution’

US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman reiterated the United States’ support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for a lasting resolution of the Sahara conflict.
"The United States continues to view the Moroccan autonomy plan as serious, credible and realistic, and as an approach that can meet the aspirations of the populations of the region," Sherman said, on a working visit to Morocco.
The American official met the same day with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and co-chaired with him the Moroccan-American strategic dialogue on regional political issues. On this occasion, the two parties expressed their "firm support" for the UN envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in the political process led by the UN on the Sahara, according to a joint statement.
During this session, the two allies also examined a series of issues of common interest, including security cooperation and human rights, and discussed regional issues related to the Sahel, Libya and Ukraine.
Bourita and Sherman cited the joint declaration, signed in 2020 by Morocco, the United States and Israel, enshrining the American recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory. They also discussed ways to strengthen this cooperation. The American official welcomed, in this regard, the continued deepening of relations between Morocco and Israel.
