Geox reduces its production in Morocco, Asian suppliers preferred

In Morocco, an Italian group had to reduce the production of its shoe collections. And for good reason...

GEOX has reduced its sourcing footprint in Morocco. This reduction has occurred over the past twelve months. Less work for the family-owned SME Prey Shoes, which accounts for a large share of the Italian brand’s production in Morocco, reports Challenge. Why this option? This is explained by the costs, while the cost of maritime freight has seen a strong easing in recent months. Another cause: the problem of integration of the leather industry in Morocco, which is much weaker than that of the textile industry. Moroccan shoe manufacturers are forced to source in Asia or Europe, particularly in Spain, Italy or Turkey.

This reduction in the group’s sourcing footprint in Morocco is mainly benefiting the Chinese and Indian suppliers of the shoe manufacturer based in Montebelluna, Veneto. Founded in 1995 by Mario Moretti Polegato, Geox specializes in the production, promotion and distribution of eponymous shoes and clothing. Its main feature is the use of innovative and technological solutions that can guarantee both breathability and waterproofness. The group achieved a turnover of 664 million euros (nearly 7 billion dirhams) at the end of 2023.
