French Senate Delegation’s Morocco Visit Postponed Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Relations between Rabat and Paris are far from rosy. Scheduled for the end of April, a visit by a French Senate delegation to Morocco has been postponed indefinitely.
The visit to Morocco of Gérard Larcher, President of the French Senate, Christian Cambon, Senator of Val-de-Marne, and Hervé Marseille, Senator of Hauts-de-France, has been postponed indefinitely, reports Africa intelligence. It seems that the French president has failed to defuse the crisis with Morocco. "We will move forward, the period is not the best, but it won’t stop me," Emmanuel Macron had said on Monday during a press conference on his strategy in Africa at the end of February. His will, he had assured, is really to move forward with the kingdom. "The king (Mohammed VI, editor’s note) knows it, we have had several discussions, there are personal relationships that are friendly," he had added.

Last December, the French Foreign Minister had visited Morocco, where she had announced the end of the policy of visa restrictions that had strained relations between Rabat and Paris. "I wish to continue for my part to practice the same appeasement," Catherine Colonna had added. Appointed as French ambassador to Morocco in mid-December, Christophe Lecourtier had announced on February 2 the return to normal in terms of issuance for Moroccan nationals. In early April, an authorized source within the Quai d’Orsay assured that "the situation is totally back to normal."
