French Politician Rachida Dati Calls for Action Against Communitarian Lists Amid Veil Debate

Former Keeper of the Seals, Rachida Dati was the guest of "Le Grand Rendez-Vous" on Europe 1 on Sunday, October 20, 2019. During the show, she stated that the rise of communitarianism is due to laxity.
While the controversy is raging around the wearing of the veil, the boss of the LR senators, Bruno Retailleau, called in the Journal du Dimanche for the banning of communitarian lists in elections.
He is supported by a member of his political family: Rachida Dati. The Mayor of the 7th arrondissement believes that the ban will first require "a definition of what a communitarian list is", hence the need to establish prerequisites.
Her political commitment, she says, "is the fight against communitarianism" because "it is what fractures our common destiny". According to the elected official, this communitarianism "could be reduced", but "we have let it thrive through laxity".
Rachida Dati thus points an accusing finger at the Government. However, she indicates the course of action to be taken. "Gender inequality is prohibited by law, as are attacks on secularism. But there would need to be a criminal policy accordingly. [...] Criminal policy, firmness and clarity must prevail," assures the former Keeper of the Seals.
Reacting to the controversy around the veil, the Mayor of the 7th arrondissement observes: "We have allowed tension to build up within the educational community". For her, school outings are part of school life.
