The French Navy intercepts a Russian tanker not far from Morocco
The French naval forces carried out an operation on Thursday to board the Grinch, a tanker coming from Russia. The vessel is suspected of being part of the "ghost fleet" that is trying to circumvent the international sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine.
The intervention took place in international waters, between Spain and Morocco, with the support of the British navy. According to President Emmanuel Macron, the ship was probably flying a false flag to conceal its origin and cargo. After the arrest, the tanker was diverted to a secure area for further investigation.
This seizure follows the opening of a judicial investigation. It comes a few months after a similar operation carried out against the tanker Pushpa off the coast of Brittany. Western authorities maintain constant surveillance on these vessels that are trying to export Russian crude oil despite the existing embargoes.
