French Muslim Council Adopts New Statutes, Aims for Grassroots Reorganization

At the end of its extraordinary general assembly held on Sunday, March 12 in Bagnolet, the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), which has no longer been considered as a dialogue body between the State and the Muslim faith since 2021, unanimously adopted new statutes.

The adoption of the new statutes opens "the way to a profound overhaul" of the CFCM, the Muslim organization indicates in a press release, specifying that this overhaul provides "a reorganization of the CFCM on the basis of departmental structures in which all mosques in France can sit in an egalitarian manner", as well as "the end of the system of co-opting half of the members of the CFCM by the statutory federations".

"Through these two changes, the CFCM wishes to give the floor back to locally elected actors who will have the necessary legitimacy," explains the Muslim organization, assuring that "these actors united by common concerns will abolish the artificial borders and divisions that have heavily hampered the CFCM in its missions".

Recalling that it "represents more than 1,100 mosques that participated in its 2020 election" out of some 2,500 places of worship in France, the CFCM states that this figure is expected to increase significantly with the new reform. It will also specify that a "new electoral regulation will be adopted shortly".
