French Conservative Leader Backs Morocco’s Claim to Western Sahara

During a visit to Morocco, Éric Ciotti, president of the Les Républicains party, expressed his support for the Moroccanness of the Sahara and called on his country, France, as well as Europe, to avoid "sending unfriendly messages" to the kingdom.
"On the issue of the Sahara, Morocco’s sovereignty is indisputable," Éric Ciotti said in a tweet, after his lunch with the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, as well as with the President of the Moroccan Senate and parliamentarians. According to him, it is urgent to resolve this strategic issue, which is also one of the points of friction between Paris and Rabat.

During this visit, the president of the Les Républicains party pleaded for the repair of past mistakes. "We must now ensure that the mistakes made and the lack of consideration shown towards Morocco are repaired," he said, after the audience granted him by the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, who is also the president of the Rassemblement national des indépendants (RNI) party. He assured that his party will participate in it: "In any case, we are participating in it, we will contribute to it in our political expression in France."
Éric Ciotti also pointed out that it is in the interest of France and Europe to maintain good relations with Morocco. "Europe cannot send such unfriendly messages to Morocco, we need this powerful link between Morocco, the European Union and France," he said.
