French Opposition Leader Urges Action as Israel Recognizes Moroccan Sahara
Eric Ciotti, president of the Republicans, welcomed on Monday Israel’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. He expressed on Twitter that Morocco’s sovereignty is undisputed and called on France to actively engage in resolving this "strategic issue".
"I am pleased with Israel’s recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. Morocco’s sovereignty is indisputable," reacted Eric Ciotti in a tweet.
The statement by the president of the Republicans comes after the announcement by the Royal Cabinet of Morocco of the receipt of a letter from the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. The latter confirmed to King Mohammed VI Israel’s official recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, a position that will now be reflected in all Israeli government acts.
Furthermore, Netanyahu indicated that this decision would be communicated to the United Nations, regional and international organizations, as well as countries maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel. Finally, he mentioned the opening of an Israeli consulate in Dakhla, as a concretization of this state decision.
