French Opposition Leader Vows to Recognize Moroccan Sovereignty over Western Sahara

In an interview, the deputy from the Alpes-Maritimes, Éric Ciotti, president of the Republican party, reiterated his support for the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. A position contrary to that adopted so far by his country, France.
Éric Ciotti is ready to "immediately recognize" the Moroccanness of the Sahara if his party Les Républicains (LR) comes to power in France. This is at least what he declared in an interview with the Israeli continuous news channel i24News. A counterpoint to Emmanuel Macron. To date, France has remained faithful to its balancing act. It has not been able to recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara for fear of disrupting its relations with Algeria, the protector of the Polisario, the independence movement. "Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is indisputable," insists Éric Ciotti. And to point out: "The debate is only maintained by Algeria for reasons of domestic politics."
During his recent visit to Morocco, the French elected official expressed his support for the Moroccanness of the Sahara and also called on France, as well as Europe, to avoid "sending unfriendly messages to the kingdom".
