France residence permit costs surge dramatically in 2024

Since May 1st, foreigners wishing to reside in France are facing a drastic increase in taxes. The new finance law has driven up the price of fiscal stamps required to obtain or renew their documents.

Obtaining a resident card or a first residence permit now costs much more. For each validated application, the fiscal stamp to be paid jumps from 225 to 350 euros. The Service Public portal indicates that this maximum rate also applies to issuing a simple duplicate. The renewal of documents is also subject to inflation, crossing the 250 euro threshold.

Profiles benefiting from a reduced rate, such as students, job seekers or seasonal workers, see their fees double. The tax increases from 75 to 150 euros for a first issuance. At the same time, an unprecedented 100 euro charge now penalizes provisional authorizations. Only rare exceptions, such as people leaving prostitution or beneficiaries of temporary protection, escape this new levy.

Access to French nationality records the most spectacular increase. Naturalization fees skyrocket, jumping abruptly from 55 to 255 euros, with the exception of French Guiana which maintains a reduced rate of half. For people in irregular situations, the regularization visa reaches 300 euros, including a mandatory advance of 100 euros, completely lost if the application is rejected.
