France: Moroccan journalist Nassira El Moaddem threatened with death

Nassira El Moaddem filed a complaint on March 24 against the former mayor of Le Blanc-Mesnil, Thierry Meignen, after extremely violent remarks reported by Le Monde. The senator (Les Républicains), defeated in the recent municipal elections, made direct threats against the Moroccan-origin journalist: "I will whip her. I will go all the way, she will die, I will kill her." These attacks follow the publication of her investigation "Main basse sur la ville" (Takeover of the city), which denounces practices of patronage and opaque management within this municipality in Seine-Saint-Denis.

In her book published by Stock, she details two terms marked by irregularities in public procurement and proximity to the far right. Faced with the seriousness of the threats, she is surprised by the lack of an official reaction: "I do not understand why, in this country, the authorities do not express outrage when a journalist is threatened with death, solely for doing her job as a journalist."
