Fake armbands, escape and arrest: how Ilyas Kherbouch's spectacular flight ended in the South

On March 20, Ilyas Kherbouch’s flight ended in Canet-en-Roussillon. Escaped from Villepinte prison thirteen days earlier with the help of fake police officers, the fugitive was apprehended with a former prison guard claiming to have been kidnapped.

Known by the nickname "Ganito", this specialist in burglary of Moroccan origin was celebrating his 21st birthday when the research and intervention brigade forced the door of his room at the Malibu Village. According to information published by Le Monde, the young man had escaped on March 7, without violence, with the help of accomplices equipped with forged documents. He is now incarcerated for organized prison escape by the judges of the specialized interregional jurisdiction of Paris.

The three alleged accomplices of this operation have already been indicted. The day after the escape, Parisian police had seized compromising material, including fake armbands, a flashing light, and a wig. Among these individuals is a former cellmate of the fugitive, while another claims to have agreed to participate under duress, after receiving threatening videos.

During this flight across Europe, the inmate was accompanied by Victoria H., 25, also indicted. The latter had briefly worked as a trainee guard in Villepinte before being struck off in March 2025. Contacted by the prisoner on Snapchat, she claims to have joined him in Melun thinking he was on leave, while she was preparing the police and gendarmerie exams.

During the investigation, the interrogations reveal two radically opposed accounts. While the young man evokes his despair, claiming he did not want to hurt anyone during the "ten best days of his life", the young woman denounces continuous violence and threats with a knife. "If you leave, I’ll take your life, or that of your loved ones," he allegedly told her. A medical certificate attesting to one day of total incapacity for work corroborates the existence of injuries.

Victoria H. explained that she had concealed the identity of the father of her child during a positive pregnancy test to protect herself from her kidnapper’s attacks. She claims to have directed their itinerary towards southern France to avoid crossing the Spanish border, hoping to find a way out at the Malibu Village where her aunt and cousin reside.
