France Heat Wave: Morocco Air Mass Pushes Temps to 40°C

This new heat wave is explained by the combination of an anticyclone established over central Europe and a depression moving towards the Azores. Between the two, a powerful south to southwest current will act as a "heat pump" and transport scorching air towards France.

According to La Chaîne Météo, the risk of meeting heat wave criteria exceeds 70% over a wide area ranging from the southwest to the center-east. This would be the fourth heat wave episode recorded in the country since the end of spring.

Up to 40°C in several regions

On Tuesday 28 July, temperatures should already reach 34 to 36°C in the southwest and 31 to 34°C from the center to the Loire Valley. The increase will accelerate on Wednesday, with values above 35°C south of a line running approximately from Rennes to Strasbourg passing through Paris.

The thermometer could display 37°C in Dijon and Clermont-Ferrand, and 38°C in Toulouse, Orléans or Bourges. Peaks of 40°C are expected between the Aquitaine basin, the Centre-Val de Loire and Burgundy.

The English Channel coasts should remain milder, with 25 to 28°C. The Mediterranean coast would also be less exposed thanks to sea breezes, with highs generally between 31 and 34°C.

The heat should persist on Thursday and Friday. Its duration beyond that remains uncertain: thunderstorms could push the hot air towards central Europe, but some scenarios extend the heat wave through the weekend.
