Former Spanish PM Zapatero Endorses Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan as "Ambitious and Reasonable"
José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero supports the autonomy plan proposed by the kingdom for the Moroccan Sahara. At a time when we are seeing a resurgence of tensions between Morocco and the Polisario front, the former Spanish Prime Minister notes that the resolution of the Sahara issue will depend on the implementation of this "ambitious and reasonable solution".
Invited to a program on the Spanish channel La Sexta, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero did not hide his concern about the situation prevailing in the Moroccan Sahara, stressing that "the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco remains an ambitious and reasonable solution", reports La Map.
For the former Spanish Prime Minister, negotiations "remain the only way" to reach a settlement to this issue, far from violence and confrontation.
It should be recalled that in Spain, several political figures from different movements, such as the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE, in power) and the Popular Party (PP, opposition), have emphasized the "legitimate nature" of the intervention of the Royal Armed Forces to secure the passage linking Morocco and Mauritania via the buffer zone of El Guerguerat.
Furthermore, these personalities have also condemned "the actions of the Polisario", which still enjoys the support of Algeria, as well as "its acts of provocation against the Minurso".
