UN Reaffirms Support for Political Solution to Moroccan Sahara Dispute

The Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly reaffirmed, on Friday, its support for the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara through the adoption of a resolution.

The parties are called upon to cooperate fully with the UN Secretary-General in order to reach a political solution to this regional dispute. This resolution strengthens the political process based on the Security Council resolutions since 2007, with a view to reaching a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution" to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The UN General Assembly expresses its satisfaction with the fact that the parties have committed to continue to demonstrate political will and work in an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, on the basis of the efforts made and the new developments since 2006, thus ensuring the implementation of the Security Council resolutions since 2007.

In 2007, Morocco had presented a plan for the autonomy of the Sahara. The present resolution expressed the support of the General Assembly for the Security Council resolutions since 2007, which have enshrined the preeminence of the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco, hailed by the executive body and the entire international community as a serious and credible initiative for the definitive settlement of this regional dispute.

For the record, resolutions 2414, 2440, 2468, 2494 and 2548 had ordered the Polisario to withdraw from the Guerguerat buffer zone and to cease all its destabilizing acts east of the defense system in the Moroccan Sahara and to refrain from any action likely to undermine the UN political process.
