Morocco’s Foreign Minister: Autonomy Plan ’Only Solution’ for Western Sahara Dispute

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad Nasser Bourita declared that "autonomy is the sole and unique solution to the conflict of the Moroccan Sahara". In 2007, Morocco had already proposed an autonomy plan.
During the inauguration of the United Arab Emirates consulate in Laâyoune, the minister hinted that Resolution 2548 of the Security Council attaches value to the autonomy project, a "credible, serious" initiative, based on a political, compromise and pragmatic solution.
"In Resolution 2548, Algeria is cited several times considering this country as the ’main stakeholder in the conflict’," said Mr. Bourita, adding that Algeria should not only sit around a table, but adhere fully and in a constructive, effective and positive manner in the search for a solution.
The Moroccan Foreign Minister said that the Security Council calls for a "pragmatic, practical and lasting solution". In other words, "it excludes any solution that is not pragmatic, practical or sustainable. It rejects any illusion and any dream," he explained. This solution is none other than autonomy, as the Security Council says "it ignores the notion of a referendum," added Mr. Bourita.
