Former Iranian Empress Praises Moroccan Royalty, Recalls Close Ties with Hassan II

Farah Diba Pahlavi, former Empress of Iran, salutes the magnanimity of King Mohammed VI and his father Hassan II, of whom she has fond memories.
"I have many memories with the late His Majesty Hassan II who was very close to us. We had traveled to Morocco, and he had come to Iran. And even after the death of the king [editor’s note: the Shah of Iran], I was in Cairo and His Majesty Hassan II was magnificent, he would send me things by plane," Farah Diba Pahlavi recounted. "Today, His Majesty Mohammed VI is adorable. When I go to Morocco, it brings me a little closer to my country, Iran," added the former Empress of Iran in an interview with the I24News channel.
In the past, Iran and Morocco maintained good relations. In 1981, Tehran broke off all diplomatic relations with Rabat in response to King Hassan II’s decision to grant asylum to the exiled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Farah Diba Pahlavi’s husband. Since then, relations between the two countries have evolved in fits and starts. The sticking points remain the Sahara issue and the spread of Shiism in the Maghreb by Iran.
