Former Coach Renard: Morocco Not Favorites for 2022 Africa Cup of Nations

About a month before the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), former Morocco coach Hervé Renard believes that the Atlas Lions are not among the favorites to win the trophy.
In an interview with Onze Mondial, the French technician, who has coached several African teams, shared his analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the major football nations currently in the running.
According to him, the Moroccans are not among the big favorites for the next CAN, which will be held in Cameroon starting January 9, 2022.
"After we can argue that they always play at home, that their group was not of enormous difficulty, but they are there. It’s a new generation, so I think they have a troublemaker card to play in this CAN behind the big favorites," said the former national team coach.
In parallel, Hervé Renard believes that Algeria remains the big favorite to win its second consecutive continental title. "After a big title and with the euphoria, we can sometimes expect more difficult times but Algeria has been able to perfectly manage the post-Africa Cup of Nations," he said.
Then, countries like Senegal, Algeria’s big challenger according to him, Cameroon, Ghana or Côte d’Ivoire will have to assert themselves to claim the title. The latter must digest their elimination from the World Cup qualifiers, he stressed.
